When Paul Kagame came to power after the Rwandan genocide in 1994, his forces brought to an end the horrific slaughter in which 800,000 people were killed in just 100 days.

In recent years President Kagame's attempts to reform and rebuild Rwanda have brought political stability and economic growth.

Yet when Rwandans go to the polls on 9 August it will be against a backdrop of accusations that the government has crushed the opposition, assassinated rivals and silenced its independent media, as Rob Walker reports.

Broadcast on Wednesday 4 August 2010.
